About

obvious, simple, respectful

Vila Madalena is a picturesque and interesting neighborhood in the west zone of São Paulo city. It is here in this neighborhood that, in 1975, I started my work with design and woodworking. This work is still informal, but already with clear concepts.
After finishing architecture school, I lived a year at California to study construction techniques in wood and iron, and in 1978, at the same Vila Madalena, I started Atelier Carlos Motta.

Design and execution of furniture, architecture, utilitarian objects, sculptures, are the main
works we do here.
The Atelier is formed by an architecture office, a very well equipped woodworking shop, the
financial and commercial department and a beautiful showroom where all the prototypes
can be seen.
These prototypes made here at the Atelier will feed different productions. Some go to our
other workshop, outside São Paulo, where small lines of handcrafted furniture will be
executed. Others go to industries that have concepts aligned with ours, and there will be
produced in series. Still, others go to super carpenters for the execution of sophisticated,
expensive lines, and with a great craft content. We also produce special requests here,
unique pieces developed especially for the client, be they homes, hotels, restaurants,
museums, churches, boats, etc., and some conceptual pieces for exhibitions and collectors.

The architecture and design that we developed here at Atelier, follow the same concept: the
search for the obvious, the simple, the respectful, and long-lived.
We operate in the civil construction area, building what we design in architecture.
The Atelier Carlos Motta was born in the 70s amid the strong counterculture movement.
Surf, Yoga, natural food, and more natural life. Ecology and respect for nature, pulsate in our
veins. Environmental and social responsibilities are in the Atelier’s genesis and DNA.
Creating the least possible impact on our planet and knowing how to share the financial
result with all those who are part of the production chain, motivate us to exist and work in
the pursuit of excellence.
